Today: Jill Piper’s 1/1 Show at the Essex Inn

1/1 Show (Photographic expressions by Jill Piper)

1/1 Show (Photographic expressions by Jill Piper)

What are you doing at 4pm this afternoon? If you’re headed off to the Essex Inn to enjoy Jill Piper’s transcendent images, I look forward to seeing you. Oggling with you. Aaahhh-ing with you. Because that’s what you do face-to-face with Jill’s photographs!

If you didn’t know about the 1/1 Show in the Essex Inn Gallery Hall, now you do. Change your plans. Hurry, before it’s too late. Before you add another regret to the attic… Between four and six o’clock today Jill will be receiving the public and answering your questions: “Do you always have a camera with you?” “How long did you sit and wait for that mysterious lighting?” “Did you Photoshop that?” You may be surprised with her answers, but you’ll be mesmerized by her magical eye and her unassuming smile.

Don’t wait because this exhibition marks the first and last printing of many of Jill’s “photographic expressions”. See you soon!

Essex is Buzzing with Activity

Historic Essex on Lake Champlain has welcomed a number of new businesses, rebounding positively from record high water this spring. In fact, the community is not just ready to welcome visitors for the summer – it is veritably BUZZING with activity. via (Lake Placid, NY)

The good folks at Adirondack regional tourism revisited their Essex story now that summer in Essex is in full swing. In the weeks in between the new businesses, the buzzing activity and enthusiasm has ripened into nothing short of an Essex renaissance. I’ve heard this reference at least a half dozen times this weekend alone! There’s a zeitgeist, a collective optimism and vision of community revitalization that has buoyed our community ever since we triumphed over Lake Champlain’s flood waters.

Welcome one and all to Essex on Lake Champlain, our fair hamlet buzzing with activity. And thank you to the countless energies who are making this dream come true. Thank you to the business owners who’ve invested their treasure, time and dreams in the future of Essex. Thank you to the hard working employees hustle and smile and create the magical lifestyle that beguiles residents and visitors alike. Thank you to everyone who has enjoyed, encouraged and shared the bounty of gifts on offer in Essex. And thank you to all who have celebrated and broadcast the exciting story of an Essex renaissance.

Here’s to a spectacular August!

Summer Theater Festival

Summer Theater Festival
presented by Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts
Saturday, July 23 β€” 1 Day, 2 Plays

Romeo & Juliet at The GrangeFor the first time, the annual, summertime traveling theater festival from the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake, will make its way to the Far East (of the Adirondack Park, that is) and land in Whallonsburg. And even better, we get to see two wonderful productions β€” One Day, Two Plays.

Romeo & Juliet
2pm, Outdoors on the lawn across from the Grange, on the banks of the Boquet River (inside in case of rain)
A fast-paced and fun presentation of the most famous play of all time, especially for kids and families. Six actors perform all the roles, with nothing but a trunk of props and a costume rack. Sword fighting, young love, family feuds β€” Shakespeare for everyone! Free admission (donations welcome). Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Great play for kids of all ages!

Conference of the Birds
8pm, On the Grange Stage
The marquee event of the ALCA Summer Festival. Legendary director Peter Brooks adapted this 12th-century Persian poem into a dramatic and exciting play filled with masks, songs and dance. The Grange will become an aviary in this magical evening of theater for all ages. Tickets$6; under 12, $3

“The play itself is a flying carpet, gliding us aloft into a land of mystery, splendor and ritual. A nation of birds is in crisis, and urged on by one of their flock, the Hoopoe, they chart a path to find their king.” –New York Times (on the original production)
